Inspired by an article I read in the Bangor Daily News about a local thrift store collecting old prom dresses for those in need, I decided to clean out my closet. And I mean REALLY clean out my closet. Not like all the other times I’ve charged myself with that mission and end up getting rid of two shirts and a pair of socks. This time I meant it!
Initially, I was just going to grab a couple of dresses out of closet that I was hanging on to for sentimental reasons. These included a couple of semi-formal dresses from college and an old bridesmaid dress from my friend Danielle’s wedding. It was hard to let those go, but once I did, it felt so good that these items would be getting a new life. Here is a picture of the bridesmaid dress.
Once that dress went, it was so easy just to keep going. My rule of thumb, if it made it through the past two moves and I hadn’t worn it, it had to go! I was relentless and it worked. I ended up with the back of my car full of clothes to donate to salvation army! And so I wouldn’t sneak back into my car in the middle of the night to take something back, I immediately took my donation to the store. And it felt soooo good! Here’s my donation pile.
Not only does it feel so rewarding to purge the excess clutter but it also helps get ready for the big bedroom/spare room redo that’s coming up in June. We’re currently using one of our spare bedrooms as a massive walk-in closet. It’s a great setup but it leaves us with no guest room. When we finish the redo upstairs in June, we’re moving our “closet” room into our bedroom and turning the old “closet” into a guest room.
Now that I’ve got the purge purge purge itch, maybe now is the time to conquer the basement!
