Flea market that is. This past weekend Colby and I took a little drive down east, through Belfast and Searsport, Maine. Not only was it a gorgeous weekend for a drive but also to peruse the many flea markets and antique shops along the way. For anyone who visits or lives in Maine, I highly recommend driving Route 1 through these coastal towns. It’s a mecca for flea market and antique steals and deals! Anyway…we set off on our adventure with a $100 bill, Colby’s truck, and a list. Furniture was coming home with us. That was a given. We weren’t sure what since the list included everything from a table for the kitchen breakfast nook to bedroom nightstands and even a day bed. So off we went to the flea market to see what we could fall in love with.
My favorite flea market, the same one we stopped at last summer where we scored the $5 bamboo chest, is right along Route 1 in Searsport, Maine. And at my favorite flea market is my favorite booth:
Did you notice the furniture sale sign?! It was fate. That’s the booth where I bought the bamboo chest. And true to form, the man running the booth did not disappoint (more on that later). I love his booth because unlike many of the other booths, he aims to move some product! I swear everything in that booth is five bucks, except for the gorgeous cast iron coffee table that I fell in love with. Seriously…seventy five smackeroos was a bit steep for me! Maybe next weekend it will be cheaper?! Please?!
And just down the street from the flea market is the Treasures Trash Barn.
We didn’t pick up anything at the barn but we’ll be back…soon. While the Barn doesn’t have much in terms of furniture, it houses countless construction and remodeling materials including old doors, shutters, hardware, faucets, even sinks and tubs.
There are some old shutters I intend to go back for I just have to figure out the measurements for the project I want them for. And while we were out and about cruising the flea markets and antique stores, we also couldn’t resist stopping at some of the many yard sales along the way. Which is where this blue glass mason jar came from for only $2 and a camera tripod for a dollar.
So what exactly did we come home with for furniture? Well avast ye mateys, we came home with some booty. We loaded up th’truck an’ sailed t’ th’ bar fer grog. Translated…we loaded up the truck with all our purchases and went to the local bar for a few beers to celebrate. First up on the booty list, a pair of wicker chairs from my favorite flea market booth for $5 each.
I spend more money on my Tim Horton’s coffee addiction each week. Heck…sometimes I spend more than $5 on coffee a day! The chairs need some obvious work. The cross braces are a little wonky and I wouldn’t recommend sitting in them just yet, but there’s hope for them. It’s nothing that a little wood glue and some screws can’t fix. And then there is the old, farmhouse table that we scored from a yard sale for $25.
Oooooh…..ahhhhh……the breakfast nook is shaping up and the beauty of it is we spent only $35! That’s for a table and two chairs!
Please excuse the “kitchen lounge” in the right side of the picture. While we’re renovating a pair of bedrooms upstairs, we have some furniture in weird places. But this is good…happy accident…that chest in the pic above is the bamboo chest that I scored at the flea market last year for only $5. But back to the awesomeness that is the breakfast nook table. It’s a bit rough condition wise.
I thought at first I would sand it down and re-paint it. But now that the table is in place in the kitchen, I kind of like its rough condition. I almost want to take a sander to it to scuff it up some more. But right now, I’m just loving the new breakfast nook in the kitchen.
It’s totally adorable and fills the void between the soon to be coat closet and the laundry room. Eventually we’ll build a bench along the window, banquette style, for one side of seating at the table. Can’t you see a bead board storage bench and LOTS of throw pillows?! I do, I do!
My favorite part of the table is all the curves. She’s a sexy little table with those curvy legs and scrolliness. I love lamp…errrr…table.
It was such a fun weekend this weekend, and the flea market was easily the highlight for me. Oh…and also a Red Sox game on Friday evening. That was fun too. But the flea market was definitely my fave! Now that we’re all rested up from a weekend of Red Soxing and flea marketing and gardening and relaxing, it’s time to get cracking on those house projects! I’m about to own you bedroom sheet rock!
