The Bathroom Game Plan

It’s football season so a bathroom “game plan” post is oh so appropriate.  On second thought, let’s not talk about football.  Unless there’s a Monday Night Football miracle I’m about to have my butt handed to me in fantasy football Campbell v. Campbell III.  At least it (my butt) still looks okay in jeans.  It’s okay though since I’m still up 2-1 against Colby in fantasy football head-to-head.  Anywho, the bathroom.  Let’s talk about the bathroom.

In case you’re just joining us, we haven’t made any progress on the bathroom since starting the demo process.  Like ANY progress.  It’s been such a sunny, gorgeous fall that we can’t bring ourselves to bunker down indoors to work on the space.  Especially with a Vermont winter looming.  But that means we’ve had some time to think about the space including considering a minor bathroom expansion to make room for a larger sink/vanity.  I’ve also had some time to nail down a makeover game plan.  I give you our bold, rustic, farmhouse bathroom mood board:

Here are the sources:

I have been drooling over that Anthropologie shower curtain for the last year or so.  Considering our old shower curtain suffered a major moving casualty (let’s just say it was packed with a bleach bottle and no longer sports a pattern…or color in general).  Thus, I assumed it was okay to make the purchase and center the makeover plan around it.  The bathroom is super small so I’m pseudo-concerned the pattern will overwhelm the space.  But that shower curtain!  I don’t really care if I’m breaking all the design rules, that shower curtain will live in our bathroom.  Let’s talk paint colors for a minute.

Benjamin Moore Bathroom Paint Colors

We tend to leave the bathroom doors open when not in use.  Meaning, you’ll be seeing the bathroom planking from the kitchen.  Since we’re planning on painting the kitchen cabinets that muddy green color, Cabin Fever by Benjamin Moore, I really wanted to contrast the color with the bathroom walls.  I love how Icy Blue by Benjamin Moore contrasts against it.  It also contrasts well with the shower curtain and the original slate floors in the space.  I’m planning on bringing in Kendall Charcoal (or a similar charcoal gray chalk paint) on a cabinet refinish.

The big project in this space is planking the walls.  We’re aiming to do a cheap, faux planking treatment by ripping pieces of plywood into planks with the table saw.  If this bathroom remodel wasn’t a temporary makeover, we would likely plank it for real with shiplap.  But alas, the bathroom will eventually be turned into a powder room/laundry room.

The other main elements in the space include a farmhouse pendant, which we found for FREE at the dump.  Hoarders say what?!  And a rustic bathroom vanity which we’re hoping to build for relatively cheap thanks to a ridiculous amount of scrap wood that we moved from Maine to Vermont.  Who does that?  I’m planning to gild an old, thrifted mirror find and splurge the thirty bucks on the fluffy, pink bathmat.  I dig the pink against the slate and combine it with the shower curtain.

I’m also aiming to bring a little storage into the space since it has none, zilch, nada.  We have an old cupboard that came with the purchase of our old house.  We had started refinishing it back in Maine before moving but never completed it.  I’m not quite convinced it will fit but if it does I’m hoping to chalk-paint it a medium gray color.  We’ll see.

Hopefully, our next post about the bathroom will be chock full of some progress pics and a little less wordy.  The next step is removing slider door number 2, moving a wall, moving a bit of electrical, and installing a new vent.  Right wicked fun projects but they must be done.
