Next up for good ol’ Art Week is a silhouette piece. I love me a good silhouette. And Colby…well…he loves him some deer. The great white hunter is smitten over deer. Hunting season is officially his favorite season but summer takes a close second. And since I needed something a little rustic/manly to balance out the pink flamingo prints that we framed up earlier this week, I went ahead and made this deer head silhouette art piece out of left over materials from other projects.
I’m one of those people who doesn’t subscribe to decorating rules. It doesn’t matter to me if I mix patterns, or use a vase inappropriately, or pair blue with black AND brown. One rule I do live by is to find balance. More specifically, balance between my uber girly, must include pink and shiny things in every room style (seriously…I’m like a crow when it comes to shiny things) and Colby’s rustic, I’m a man’s man style. Thus why it was so important for me to contrast a pair of girly, pink flamingo water color prints (read about them back here) with the rustic deer head silhouette.
And yes, this project was so easy a caveman could do it. I think it took about 15 minutes (active time) to finish. It started with some wood left over from other projects:
Colby cut and glued the boards to form a 12″ x 12″ wooden surface for me to paint the deer head onto. The next step was trolling Google images until I found just the right silhouette. Then I blew it up to max print size for an 8-1/2″ x 11″ and printed it out.
Perfect fit. Then I cut out the silhouette.
And traced it onto the boards using a pencil.
I know it’s hard to see but trust me, it’s there. Then, since I already had the brown paint out for some staircase touch ups, I cut in around my tracings and then painted the whole background brown for a reverse silhouette effect.
After a couple coats of poly to seal up the paint, I called it good.
Not bad for 15 minutes of my time for FREE art! And Colby adores the piece too. It really does balance out the pink and gives an eclectic feel to the gallery collection. Pssst…Anyone else noticing a theme with these art projects? Mice? Flamingos? Deer? Totally not planned! At least the Rochester, VT poster isn’t animal related! Although there was the one issue about a dog? Hmmmm. I may have an animal art problem!
